In Ovartaci’s footsteps
– a creative winter holiday

During the school winter break Museum Ovartaci opens the doors for some creative family fun in the B&U workshop.

Starting Feb. 12th – Feb 16th you can combine your visit in the exhibition with a creative and fun family experience in the B&U workshop. All days from 11-14.

You can follow in the footsteps of Ovartaci and create your very own Ovartaci inspired figures, colour special Ovartaci drawings, or make a collage-fantasy figurine of coloured everyday stuff.

On top of this, you can help in the creation of a woven rug with recycled fabric in the colours of Ovartaci.

The workshop is free for children accompanied by adults. Children under 18 years of age gain free access to the museum.

We look forward to seeing you at Museum Ovartaci.

Klokkebarn, Blodmenneske, Dråben
– temporary exhibition with Kathrine Ærtebjerg

Join Museum Ovartaci when the doors to the new temporary exhibition “Klokkebarn, Blodmenneske, Dråben” by Kathrine Ærtebjerg opens on Thursday 22nd February 17-20.

“Klokkebarn, Blodmenneske, Dråben” is a story, where wooden figures, paintings, and music by artist Kathrine Ærtebjerg lets us into an innocent, open, and vulnerable world.

The exhibition invites the viewer to play along and create personalities for the wooden figures. Who they are, their relationships with each other, and the story that connects them.

Like Ovartaci, Ærtebjerg is especially interested in the imaginary world, creativity, the body, and gender. Both of them express longing and loneliness but also happiness and connectedness in their works.

The temporary exhibition is available from February 22nd to 11th August. It opens on February 22nd at 17.00 with free admission to the exhibition. Everyone is welcome to join.

Ensemble Hermes – Follia – Classical concert with Ensemble Hermes

Experience a special classical music ensemble at Museum Ovartaci when Ensemble Hermes performs La Follia on February 25th at 15:00. The concert will take you through the main exhibition and become a part of the experience.

Follia is best translated to folly, insanity, foolishness, or craziness.
The theme Follia, a characteristic and timeless rhythmic and harmonic scheme, is one of the oldest musical themes originating from the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. Since the 16th century many composers some known and some unknown, have used this as a way to express themselves through music. Often times using strings where Follia is a huge part of the backstory.

During the concert you will experience some of the most influential follias along with a newly composed piece by composer Christian Balvig. This 1-hour performance will unite old and new via the music and paintings.

Programme: Follias by Rodrigo Martinez, Francesco Geminiani, J. S. Bach, C. P. E. Bach, Rachmaninov og Christian Balvig.

The concert is made possible with support from Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium and William Demant Fonden.

Free entrance to the concert once a ticket has been purchased. Tickets available through this link:

The guided tour is approximately one hour, and we recommend you explore the exhibition on your own afterwards.

An active museum – the best volunteers

Museum Ovartaci is an active museum with many projects. Because of this, the museum established a new event-team. This team will consist of volunteers connected to the museum and externally from ReThinkers. Together these two groups will assist in many future events.

One of the many events they will help with is the anniversary of Ovartaci’s 130th birthday. Furthermore, the event-team will help with the many exciting events at the museum and around town during the year. This includes exhibition openings, activities aimed at children, book launches, concerts, and pop-up workshops at DOKK1.

If you regret not participating in the introductory meeting then please do not hesitate to contact our coordinators for volunteers – Niels Erik (niels_erik@ovartaci.dk) or Elsebeth (elsebeth.n.johansen@ovartaci.dk)

Loving the alien

23 artworks by Ovartaci are currently part of an exhibition in Madrid called “Loving the Alien”.

On February 1st the exhibition “Loving the Alien” opened in La Casa Encendida in Madrid. A large amount of young people were present at the exhibition in the afternoon. This followed the press conference that took place in the exhibition in the morning.

“Loving the Alien” – named after a song by David Bowie – invites the viewer to rethink the limits of our bodies and identities, and to reflect over the differences and metamorphoses through the viewpoint of the four artists.

The director for Casa Encendida, Pablo Berástegui, thanked the two curators for the project and the artists Sandra Mujinga (DR Congo), Anne Duk Hee Jordan (Germany), and Maria Katayama (Japan) along with Mia Lejsted, director of Museum Ovartaci, for allowing us to experience how they artistically define their ideas about being different in an otherwise complex world.

The exhibition is another highlight of the international success Ovartaci is currently enjoying – like the exhibition in La Biennale di Venezia – by being the only deceased artist invited to participate in the exhibition.

What does this tell us? That Ovartaci is modern and universally applicable and reflects the current complexity of human identities, normality, human’s relationship with the world, and the free will.

La Casa Encendida in the centre of Madrid is the exactly right place for this discourse: a lively, young and dynamic centre for culture with an ideal exhibition area along with a library, auditorium, a café, and opportunities for many different events aimed at people of all ages.

The exhibition is open until April 28th 2024
