Artists at the Museum

The Art Museum and the special art exhibitions hold a unique and interesting collection of art and artefacts originating from an inner need to express oneself and to be creative as a means of help to self-help.

During the 19th and the first part of the 20th century these activities served to break the limiting ties of institutionalised life. Several patients succeeded in doing so and achieved, through creativity, a much higher quality of life, socially as well as practically.

The art exhibited in this Museum, and art by artists suffering from mental illness in general, is not a special artform. It should not be regarded outsider-art, l'art brut, raw art or similar designations. Many of our visitors, however, express that the exhibition is far more relevant and makes a stronger impression than art in other museums.

The 4 galleries at the Museum and the gallery in the Museum Café always present interesting exhibitons. You may enjoy the exhibition and your lunch in the Museum Café.

Posters and postcards are sold at the museum.
