Conference in Prague

Connecting the European Mind

Conference in Prague October 2009

Achitecture by Michael Golieb Bindesböll

This sketch done by the artist
and patient for 56 years, Ovartaci,
describes how he had populated
his own room at the hospital.
The picture also gives you an idea
of how Ovartaci wanted to decorate
the whole hospital in order to give
pleasure to patients as well as staff.

The first arrangement in the collaboration between the museums will be a conference in Prague from 29th till 31st October 2009. The conference is being hosted and arranged by the psychiatric historical museum at the old asylum, Bohnice. We expect 20-40 European museums and collections to participate.

A topical debate

All partners in the project: “Connecting the European Mind” make a presentation at the conference in Pragueand the Museum contributes the paper with the working-title: ”The Aesthetics of Insanity and the Significance of Beauty”. The subject matter will be: “On a background of the world picture of art in the middle decades of the nineteenth century, we shall discuss the role of art, architecture and aesthetics concerning healing in the staging of the asylum as well as in the contemporary institution”.

In a Danish, as well as in a European context, this is a both relevant and topical debate. It was implicit in the lay-out by the physician Harald Selmer and architect Bindesböll of the Asylum in Risskov, Jutland and their contributions to the Asylum in Oringe near Vordingborg and “Kurhuset” at Skt. Hans, which all open their doors between 1850 and 1860. Altogether they mark a totally new era in Danish psychiatry.
